Safety in the distribution center: the secret behind efficiency and productivity.

4 July, 2023 Health Care

Safety in the distribution center is a crucial issue to ensure efficiency and productivity in operations. It is an aspect that not only involves the protection of warehouse assets and infrastructure, but also the well-being of workers operating on site. Therefore, it is important to consider various risk situations and work on implementing preventive measures.

One of the main risks in distribution centers is related to warehouse characteristics. These can be places with limited spaces, with shelves reaching great heights and that sometimes do not have the necessary lighting conditions. All of this can create dangerous situations for workers, especially for those handling heavy loads.

On the other hand, stored products can also pose a risk if not handled properly. In the case of chemical or flammable products, special measures must be taken to ensure their safe storage and handling. In addition, it is important to consider that some products may require special temperature or humidity conditions, making it necessary to implement specific measures to ensure their preservation.

Handling methods can also be a risk factor in distribution centers. The way products are handled, especially larger or heavier ones, can increase the risk of injury to workers. To minimize these risks, training programs can be implemented to teach safe handling techniques and provide appropriate tools and equipment for the task.

Safety in the distribution center is essential to ensure efficiency and productivity in operations. It is important to consider all aspects that may pose a risk to workers and take preventive measures to minimize them. In this way, a safe working environment is achieved and the integrity of workers, infrastructure, and stored products is protected.

Personal protective equipment

It is important to use personal protective equipment, such as appropriate footwear with non-slip soles and steel insoles, ear protectors, safety glasses, and protective gloves for handling certain materials. The use of safety harnesses for any work at height should be mandatory.

Signage

Signage is an important factor for safety in the distribution center. Different operational areas should be marked, such as safety zones, routes, evacuation doors, machinery zones, and restrooms. Barricades, demarcation, and signs can be used.

Storage processes

Stored load units at height should be reflected and filmed. Pallets should be supported on crossbeams and clearances should be respected when placing load units in locations. The forklift should never be located below stored material. The maximum load weight of the shelves must be respected. Workers should not be lifted on wooden pallets for height work. Manual picking of products should be done at floor level. Electric stackers or forklifts should lower pallets as needed.

Use of forklifts

It is essential to keep the siren, horn and rotating beacon in perfect condition. The forklift should not be used to transport material that exceeds its load capacity or to transport people. It should only be operated by trained personnel who meet the required physical and psychological conditions. They should not have a history of heart disease or epilepsy or a propensity for fainting or dizziness.

Maintenance

It is important to carry out control, maintenance and replacement tasks for damaged elements. These tasks should be planned in advance.

Staff training

It is necessary to implement hygiene and safety standards, prior training on the characteristics, limitations and use of work equipment and tools, knowledge of procedures in case of damage, and to create a culture of self-care.

Other safety elements

It is recommended to have smoke detectors, fire alarms and systems, emergency lights, first aid kits, defibrillators, video cameras, access control systems (readers, turnstiles and gates), control of authorized vehicles, perimeter devices and emergency exits with anti-panic devices.

In short, safety in the distribution center is a competitive advantage for any 3PL company looking to stand out in the market. Not only does it ensure the protection of merchandise and the physical integrity of workers, but it also improves productivity and efficiency in operations.

That is why it is essential for 3PL companies to implement prevention and risk management strategies and policies in their distribution centers and train their staff in safety and hygiene standards. In addition, it is important to keep equipment and facilities in optimal condition and have the necessary security systems for asset protection and detection of any potential threat.

Through the implementation of prevention and risk management measures, staff training and maintenance of facilities and equipment, companies can ensure the protection of merchandise, worker safety and improvement in productivity and efficiency of their operations.
